Society for Underwater Exploration

With all the focus on outer space, what with the space shuttle and the new space station, I thought it would be fun to go in the other direction, and look at a site that explored inner space. Today’s FamSite is one that goes to great depths to get that message across.

The site is called the Society for Underwater Exploration. It is a non-profit organization that sponsors research, exploration and excavation activities around the world aimed at finding and recovering or preserving underwater shipwrecks and other underwater sites of special historical and cultural significance. That is an big mission, but they also try to educate through television programming, the World Wide Web, books and CD-ROMs and other media that is easily understood by all of us. Their current project is searching for the ancient city of Alexandria, Egypt, where Cleopatra once had a palace. It makes for fascinating reading and exploring.

There is a lot to be learned from the oceans around us. Not only from an environmental stand, but from a historical one as well. Sites like this help further that message.
